How Solar Energy Works

I’m a Solar Panel

Converts light energy of the Sun into Direct Current (DC) power through Photovoltaic (PV) technology

Silicon based solar cells are laminated with glass and other material

Each panel typically has a power rating of 340 - Watt and the smallest rooftop solar project is typically 1 Kilowatt (KW) i.e. 3 panels

There are two crystalline solar technologies - Monocrystalline and Polycrystalline

Sunvest prefers high efficiency Monocrystalline solar panels for they have better performance in Indian conditions

Since India is in the northern hemisphere, solar panels face south, at the angle of inclination, which is ideally the latitude of the location

1 KW and the Rule of 100: 1 KW typically takes up 100 sq.ft., generates about 100 units of energy in a month and weighs about 100 Kgs

Warranties – OEMs typically give 10 years of product warranty and 25 years of generation warranty for their solar panels

Sunvest criteria for solar panel selection:

We are downstream partners with DNV GL - a global leader in PV quality assessment. We pick only those panels are that top rated by them

We have verifiable historic generation data from our projects, which allows us to select the panels that work best in the Indian conditions

We work with OEM partners that are top ranked globally in terms of latest technology, market share, reputation and after sales service

I’m a Solar Inverter

Converts (inverts) DC power into AC power

Can be found in two types:

Microinverters / Module Level Optimizers

Each module has an inverter / optimizer of its own giving excellent technical efficiency in the long run

Advantages: Superior technology, great for shaded roofs or dusty, soiling conditions typical to India. Free data monitoring for 25 years

Warranty: 25 Years

String Inverter

All solar panels are connected together and a string inverter is installed at the end of the array

Advantages: Better pricing than module level optimization

Warranty: 5 Years

Sunvest criteria for solar inverters

We are downstream partners with DNV GL - a global leader in PV quality assessment. We pick only those inverters are that top rated by them

Our experience suggests that module level optimization is critical for Indian conditions and provides far higher value in the long run

We work with OEM partners that are top ranked globally in terms of latest technology, market share, reputation and after sales service

The technical team is fully trained by the inverter manufacturer, which adds immense value during installation and after sales service

I’m the Module Mounting Structure

The structure where the solar panels are fixed

Typically, MMS are commonly of three types:

Non-Penetrating Structure at the Roof Level with the use of foundation blocks and aluminum mounting structures

Structures for Sheet Roofs

Superstructures using Mild Steel

Sunvest criteria for module mounting structures:

A structural stability certificate from a third-party / independent auditor is important in verifying the structural strength and integrity for wind load and point load

Hot dip galvanization certificate is key in ensuring your structure is free from rust and other vagaries related to climatic conditions

We provide you both the certificates - Safety first

Don’t Forget the Safety Equipment

Solar power works in parallel with your Utility power

In most cases, the Utility has stringent checks to ensure your system is safe and reliable

The right distribution boxes, right size cables, circuit breakers, lightning arrestors, earthing pits etc. must be included to ensure you and your roof are safe

I’m the Net Meter

In most places in India now, you can sell power back from your rooftop solar plant to your Utility

Your existing meter, which counts only the power you 'Import' from the Utility now changes to a net meter, which counts both the power you import and export. You are charged for the ‘net’ consumption hence the word ‘net’ meter

Please watch this video to understand net metering basics

Sunvest has pioneered the small rooftop space by installing some of the first few net metering-based projects in Mumbai, Delhi and other cities
